International Workshop on Circular Economy and Sustainability 2025
We invite you to attend our 3rd International Workshop on Circular Economy and Sustainability, this year with the theme Collaboration for Circular Action.
To be hosted by the historic University of Bologna, this workshop will build on our successful previous workshops in 2023 and 2024, at the Monash Prato Centre in Italy.
Having established strong circular partnerships and capacity in our first two workshops, we will this year focus on developing collaborative research projects and programs to accelerate the transition to a circular economy beyond our individual institutional efforts.
In addition to keynote presentations and panel discussions, we will spend much of our time scoping and scaling research projects, identifying funding opportunities and developing project implementation plans.
Proposed key outcomes from this workshop include:
- A prioritised research agenda to accelerate the transition to a circular economy
- Collaborative teams to address key streams of the research agenda
- Identified funding to facilitate the achievement of the research agenda
This year’s workshop will be held immediately after the EurOMA 2025 conference (Milan, 13–18 June) and immediately before the EURAM 2025 conference (Florence, 22–25 June).
This presents a great opportunity to attend our workshop and one of these conferences!

Workshop Chair
Professor Amrik Sohal, Department of Management, Monash Business School, Monash University
Professor Sohal’s teaching and research covers operations/innovation/technology management, supply chain management, circular economy and sustainability, and healthcare improvement.
He holds a PhD in Operations Management from the University of Bradford Management Centre in the UK, plus a BEng (Hons) and an MBA, also from the University of Bradford.
He has received research grants from the State and Federal Governments, the Australian Research Council, a number of industry associations and businesses, as well as from Monash University.
In 2001, Prof Sohal received the Vice-Chancellor's Award for Postgraduate Supervision. In 2004, he received an award for research excellence from the International Association for Management of Technology and in 2009 the publications award from the same organisation. In 2010, Professor Sohal received the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Research, and in 2013, the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Innovation and External Engagement.
He was a Board member of the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Management (ANZAM) for over 10 years and ANZAM President during 2009. In 2011, Professor Sohal was awarded Life Fellow of ANZAM.

Associate Professor Glen Croy, Department of Management, Monash Business School, Monash University
A/Prof Croy is an award-winning educator and researcher. His expertise is in the activation of training and learning for the adoption of new approaches to address emerging challenges.
A/Prof Croy has effectively demonstrated this in a range of business, community, and education contexts, with participants achieving and retaining development objectives.
Dr Alka Nand, Department of Management, Monash Business School, Monash University
Dr Nand’s expertise lies in the operations and supply chain management fields. Her studies have been based in the services and manufacturing sector and public sector.
Dr Nand obtained her PhD from the University of Melbourne, and her thesis examined how firms in Australian service and manufacturing industries treated and developed their operational capabilities using primarily secondary data. She also has strong interests in areas such as food waste, sustainability, and circular economies.
Associate Professor Martin Geissdoerfer, Monash Sustainable
Development Institute, Monash University 
Martin Geissdoerfer is Associate Professor of Circular Economy Transitions at Monash University’s Monash Sustainable Development Institute, where he leads the institute’s Circular Economy work. He is also an Associate at University of Cambridge’s Circular Economy Centre. Martin is among the most highly cited sustainability scientists globally and has authored some of the most influential academic work on the circular economy.
His research focuses on circular economy transitions, business model innovation, and sustainability strategies, with his work widely adopted in academia and policy and management practice. He previously advised global Fortune 500 companies and policymakers on circular economy and sustainability strategy, and business building and how to employ policy labs to improve outcomes, at McKinsey & Company.
Associate Professor Matteo Mura, Department of Management, University of Bologna
Associate Professor Mura specialises in Management Engineering at the Department of Management, Bologna Business School, University of Bologna. He is a Visiting Fellow at the Center for Business Performance of the Cranfield School of Management, and a Teaching Associate at the Warwick Business School. He is also Director of the Centre for Sustainability and Climate Change at Bologna Business School.
A/Prof Mura’s research focuses on industrial sustainability, transition and sustainability performance measurement systems. He collaborates with research centres in the UK, Switzerland and Brazil, and coordinates research projects funded by the European Commission and important Italian companies.
He has published 42 journal articles, six book chapters and has been a speaker at over 50 conferences (including 14 invited speeches, including the European Commission).
Senior Assistant Professor Leticia Canal Vieira, Department of Management, University of Bologna
Senior Assistant Professor Canal Vieira specialises in Sustainability Transition Management. She received her PhD in Environmental Planning from Griffith University, Australia, in 2019.
Her research focuses on how organisations respond to global sustainability challenges, with her recent publications exploring how manufacturing companies address climate change and develop strategies to achieve net zero targets. In addition to continuing research on decarbonisation strategies, she is involved in projects related to the circular economy and sustainability reporting.
