Seminar: Preserving Organizational Trust during Times of Threat

11/16/2018 01:00 pm 11/16/2018 02:00 pm Australia/Melbourne Seminar: Preserving Organizational Trust during Times of Threat

The Department of Management invites you to a research seminar 'Preserving Organizational Trust During Times of Threat' presented by Associate Professor Nicole Gillespie, from The University of Queensland.

No RSVP is required.

Abstract summary

Trust is recognized as central to effective organizational functioning. To date, scholarly attention has focused on understanding trust building and repair.  In contrast, little consideration has been paid to the preservation of trust. Yet organizations often have to deal proactively with situations that heighten employee uncertainty and vulnerability and threaten internal trust relationships, such as strategic transformations, structural changes, downsizing and cost-cutting. To investigate how organizational trust is preserved in these contexts, we conducted a qualitative, multi-case examination of four organizations (2 public and 2 private sector) that experienced major upheaval in response to the 2009 Global Financial Crisis. Our study makes three contributions to the trust literature. First, we conceptually distinguish trust preservation from trust building and repair. Second, we develop a conceptual model of the dynamics and practices underlying the preservation of organizational trust. Third, we introduce the concept of the ‘organizational trust repertoire’ and show how an organization's trust repertoire pre-threat can both enable and constrain trust preservation.

Presenter

Nicole Gillespie is Associate Professor of Management and Associate Director of Research at the University of Queensland Business School and International Research Fellow at the Centre for Corporate Reputation, Oxford University. Nicole’s research focuses on the development and repair of organizational and stakeholder trust, particularly in challenging contexts such as after trust failures, during organizational change and technological disruption, and in contested industries. Nicole has written commissioned reports on building and repairing trust for the Institute of Business Ethics (sponsored by PwC) and a policy note on restoring trust in the financial sector for the UK Parliament, and has consulted to and/or conducted research in a range of private and public sector organisations including Barclays Bank, UBS Bank, Santos, Origin Energy, CSIRO, the Australian Army and the Royal Flying Doctor Service.  Her research appears in leading journals such as the Academy of Management Review, Journal of Management, Journal of Applied Psychology, Business Ethics Quarterly, Organization Studies, Human Resource Management and Sloan Management Review.
