The Peter Chandler Oration is a tribute to the visionary Peter Chandler, Emeritus Professor in Marketing at Monash Business School.

For this year’s Oration, our Monash Marketing Distinguished Alumni recipient, long-time department stalwart and global business leader Tony Palmer will share the lessons he learned from Prof Chandler, and how they shaped his own 30–year career.

Prof Chandler’s vision, to create a marketing qualification and establish marketing as a key driver of business prosperity, has led to more than 22,000 students graduating with a marketing qualification from Monash University since the first intake in 1971.

Professor Chandler shaped the careers of many eminent Monash Marketing alumni, including:

  • Peter Fox AM, Executive Chairman of Linfox Pty Ltd
  • Penny Fowler, Chairman, Herald & Weekly Times, News Corp Australia

Mr Palmer is a global business leader, P&L owner, board member and entrepreneur with an exceptional record of accelerating growth and enhancing profitability at leading consumer brands, including Kimberly-Clark, Kellogg, and Coca-Cola. He has extensive P&L leadership, global marketing and general management experience and expertise, and is recognised for his ability to attract and develop top talent.

Mr Palmer joined One Rock Capital Partners, LLC, a private equity firm, in April 2022 as a senior advisor focused on investments in the food and beverage industry. Prior to this, Mr Palmer was founder and CEO of TropicSport, a natural suncare and skincare products company, from April 2019 to December 2022.

From 2006 to 2019 Mr Palmer served at Kimberly-Clark as the first Chief Marketing Officer and then President, Global Brands and Innovation with responsibility for $20 billion P&L. Mr Palmer was instrumental in transforming the company into an e-commerce and innovation powerhouse, and developing and implementing a portfolio management strategy that nearly doubled return on invested capital and delivered total shareholder return 30 per cent above the S&P 500 during his 13-year tenure.

Prior to this, Mr Palmer served in various leadership positions at The Kellogg Company and the Coca-Cola Company.

Since 2011, Mr Palmer has served on the board of the $10 billion Hershey Company.

Since December 2023 he has served as a senior advisor to the Board of Constantia Flexible Packaging, Europe’s largest supplier of flexible packaging solutions.

Mr Palmer holds a MBA from the International Management Institute (now IMD) in Switzerland, and a Bachelor of Business Marketing from Monash Business School.

He has been the recipient of numerous awards including Ad Age’s Media Maven 2008, Creativity Top 50 2011,  The Monash University Distinguished Alumni Award 2014 and the Australian Marketing Institute Charles McGrath Award for exceptional contribution to marketing.

Mr Palmer was inducted into the Global Institute of Marketing Science Hall of Fame in 2007.
