As COVID-19 continues to wreak devastation around the world, Chief Scientist for the World Health Organisation (WHO) Dr Swaminathan will discuss global epidemiological scenarios, challenges and policy priorities.
She will be joined in a panel discussion by Professor Sharon Lewin, Director of the Peter Doherty Institute; Professor Raina Maclntyre, NHMRC Principal Research Fellow and Professor of Global Biosecurity, Kirby Institute, UNSW; and Dr Stephen King, Commissioner with the Productivity Commission and Adjunct Professor, Monash University.
This event will be moderated by Peter Martin, Business and Economy editor for The Conversation website.

Dr Soumya Swaminathan, Chief Scientist for the World Health Organisation (WHO)
A globally recognised researcher on tuberculosis and HIV and a paediatrician, Dr Soumya Swaminathan has 30 years of experience in clinical care and research and has worked throughout her career to translate research into impactful programmes. She was most recently WHO's Deputy Director-General for Programmes. Dr Swaminathan was also Secretary to the Government of India for Health Research and Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research from 2015 to 2017. From 2009 to 2011, she served as Coordinator of the UNICEF/UNDP/World Bank/WHO Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases in Geneva. She received her academic training in India, UK and the USA, and has published more than 350 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters. She is an elected Foreign Fellow of the US National Academy of Medicine and a Fellow of all three science academies in India.

Peter Martin is Business and Economy Editor of The Conversation and a visiting fellow at the Crawford School of Public Policy at the ANU. A former Commonwealth Treasury official, he has worked as economics correspondent for the ABC, as economics editor of The Age, and as host of The Economists on ABC Radio National. In 2019 He was made a member of the Order of Australia (AM).

Professor Sharon Lewin, Director, The Peter Doherty Institute
Professor Sharon Lewin is an infectious diseases physician and scientist. She is internationally renowned for her research into all aspects of HIV disease and pathogenesis. She is the inaugural director of the Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity at the University of Melbourne; consultant physician at the Alfred Hospital; and an Australian National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Practitioner Fellow.
Professor Raina MacIntyre, NHMRC Principal Research Fellow and Professor of Global Biosecurity, Kirby Institute, UNSW
Professor MacIntyre heads the Biosecurity Program at the Kirby Institute, which conducts research in epidemiology, vaccinology, bioterrorism prevention, mathematical modelling, genetic epidemiology, public health and clinical trials in infectious diseases. Her research includes personal protective equipment, vaccinology, epidemic response, emerging infectious diseases, and bioterrorism prevention. She is a dual-specialist physician with training in epidemiology and modelling. She leads the NHMRC Centre for Research Excellence in Epidemic Response, Integrated Systems for Epidemic Response (ISER), the first in Australia to be dedicated to epidemic response.
Dr Stephen King, Commissioner, Productivity Commision, Australian Government
Dr Stephen P. King joined the Productivity Commission as a Commissioner from 1 July 2016. He is currently presiding Commissioner for the inquiry into Mental Health. Before this he was a Professor of Economics at Monash University and Dean of the Faculty of Business and Economics from 2009-2011. Dr King’s main areas of expertise are in microeconomic theory, competition economics, regulation and industrial organization. Dr King is an adjunct professor at Monash University, a member of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia and a Lay Member of the High Court of New Zealand.
