Higher education expert Professor Andrew Norton to join Monash Business School

Australian higher education policy expert Professor Andrew Norton has joined Monash Business School, boosting our long-standing research capabilities and complementing our growing reputation as reflected in our recent rankings success.

Prof Norton joins the university from ANU, where he was Professor in the Practice of Higher Education Policy at POLIS: The Centre for Social Policy Research from 2019 to 2024.

Announcing the appointment effective from 20 January, Prof Michelle Welsh, Acting Head, Monash Business School and Acting Dean, Faculty of Business and Economics said Prof Norton would be a major asset.

“Professor Norton is very well known and regarded for his incisive knowledge and research that makes a major contribution to informed debate around higher education policy at the highest levels in Australia,” Prof Welsh said.

“His appointment aligns perfectly with our Impact 2030 strategy, strengthening our commitment to world class education and research that addresses global challenges for the betterment of our communities."

Prof Norton joins Monash Business School “during a period of remarkable global recognition, with the school ranked in the Top 10 for Economics and Business in the US News ranking and 3rd for Business Administration in the ARWU (Shanghai) ranking,” Prof Welsh said.

His extensive experience includes roles as Higher Education Program Director at the Grattan Institute, and a number of government and education advisory roles.

In addition, Prof Norton is a widely published author and co-author on a vast range of higher education topics. His study Mapping Australian higher education 2023 is a highly regarded overview of higher education policy and trends.

In 2023 he was on the ministerial reference group for the Universities Accord.
