Professor Paul Collier

Professor Paul Collier is Director of the Monash MBA Program. He teaches accounting and strategy, and supervises corporate projects in the MBA program.

Paul completed a Bachelor of Business degree in accounting and a Graduate Diploma in Education from University of Technology Sydney and completed his Master of Commerce in organizational behaviour at University of New South Wales. He gained his PhD from Warwick University in the UK.

Paul’s career began in industry, where he became Chief Financial Officer and Company Secretary, and subsequently General Manager (Operations) of Computer Resources Company, a Stock Exchange listed manufacturing company in Sydney; then moved to the UK where he was Head of Training and Development for West Mercia Police.

After completing his PhD, where his research was on the impact of strategy, performance measurement and management control in the public sector, Paul moved into academia. He became Senior Lecturer and Director of Executive Education with Aston Business School in Birmingham. He returned to Australia and became a Professor at Monash Business School, where his roles included Deputy Head of the (then) Department of Accounting and Finance with responsibility for management accounting and accounting information systems. He later became Associate Dean (Research Training), with responsibility for the faculty’s PhD program.

Paul's research interests included management control, performance measurement, risk management and governance in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors. He has authored over 30 academic journal papers and book chapters. He was an ESRC Advanced Institute of Management research fellow and has been awarded Australian Research Council research grants. He is the author of two text books including the text "Accounting for Managers" now in its 5th edition. Paul has been an examiner and subject matter expert for CIMA in the UK and for CPA Australia. He has been on the board of Peninsula Health (which operates Frankston Hospital) and Festival Housing Group (a UK social housing provider).
