Competency Framework
Monash Business School’s Competency Framework identifies the key competencies - transferable skills, knowledge and attributes vital to any business career - that all our students will develop as part of their studies.
These competencies reflect the Monash Graduate Attributes, the Business School’s Vision, Purpose and Values, discipline learning standards developed by the Australian Business Deans Council, and feedback from employers and the business community.
| Discipline knowledge and skills | Demonstrate subject matter expertise in their chosen area(s) of business and in the application of this knowledge, and awareness of related disciplines; |
| Critical thinking and problem solving | Identify problems in a business context and provide appropriate, well-reasoned and evidence-based recommendations and solutions; |
| Communication skills | Communicate effectively in a business context, verbally and in writing, to articulate thoughts and ideas and understand the views of others; |
| Research skills | Identify, critically evaluate and appropriately acknowledge sources of relevant information and methods of gathering and/or generating insights and knowledge; |
| Teamwork and leadership | Collaborate effectively, contributing to team performance and the achievement of collective goals, and demonstrate leadership where appropriate; |
| Global perspective | Display awareness of the international, globalised nature of contemporary business activities and systems and the role of business in contributing to global issues; |
| Social and environmental responsibility | Ensure that business actions and decisions contribute in a positive, ethical, sustainable manner to the wider community and surroundings; |
| Diversity and inclusion | Demonstrate respect for diversity, and effectively incorporate differing perspectives, cultures, identities, skills and abilities into business practices; |
All of Monash Business School’s coursework degrees develop and assess these eight competencies. The Business School’s research degrees focus on the first four competencies.
Our Assurance of Learning process monitors where these competencies are developed and assessed in each course, measures student attainment of the competencies, and informs continuous improvement of the curriculum.
