Awake! The Whole World is Waiting

By Professor Jean Allain and Morag Milne

Our focus

As a law school we have a long tradition of international interaction, providing students with overseas study opportunities, and engaging with foreign universities and law firms.

Our focus is to be a leading international, clinical, and digital law school in the Asia-Pacific region as well as at Monash University’s global locations.

In Italy and Malaysia, we carry out teaching programs on an annual basis. We benefit from our connections by embedding a broad and diverse sense of internationalisation in our approach to education and research.

The return of overseas study opportunities

With the international borders closed for nearly two years, our signature international programs had to go into hibernation.

In 2022 we readied ourselves for the time the borders once again opened to international travel and our focus was to wake-up to the new possibilities in a post-lockdown world.

Monash Global Campus Intensives (MGCI) are an important part of the student experience and a flagship of our law school for many years. So it was with a great sense of satisfaction that we were able to provide MGCI opportunities in 2022 to 117 students travelling to Prato, Italy, and 17 students to our Malaysian campus.

In Semester 2 2022, 115 of our students were able to fly overseas to take up other student exchange opportunities. Our students travelled to Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Netherlands, Singapore, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States. We’ve also already had significant applications Semester 1 and Semester 2 next year.

Additionally, five of our LLB students applied and were accepted into the LLM Pathway Program with King’s College London.

A large number of our student international study experiences have been supported by successful applications to the New Colombo Plan Mobility Grant.

Alumni and professional network

Our academics have hosted and participated in numerous conferences around the world. We’ve deepened our links with strategic partners, including high-level meetings with the Law School at Jindal University, India, King’s College, London, and Pennsylvania State University.

In July the Faculty hosted the Louis Waller Fireside Chat, an intimate hybrid event in the Clayton Moot Court where a panel of students and supervisors showcased the value of experiential and innovative legal education and of university run law clinics as experienced through Monash’s Climate Justice Law Clinic and Tel Aviv University’s Environmental Justice Clinic.

Monash Law hosted a high-level delegation from Vietnam including its Vice-Minister of Justice, the Rector of the Southern College of Law, and the Vice-Rector of Hanoi Law University with discussions taking place as to future possible cooperation.

The Faculty also sent a high-level delegation to the leading law schools in Indonesia. Through the good offices of the Indonesian Embassy in Canberra, we visited five law schools, with the Dean hosting a meeting at Monash University’s newest campus in Jakarta. Monash Law is leading the University’s move to develop the Indonesian Campus with a view to creating study and research opportunities between ourselves and our neighbour to the north.

We look forward to continuing to strengthen our relationships in our region and worldwide, as well as providing signature international opportunities for our law students in 2023.
