Harnessing Implementation Science for Healthcare Improvement, Real-World Impact, and Equity

Program Overview

This course is designed as a self-paced learning experience, enabling you to build foundational capability in implementation science in a way that fits your schedule and professional commitments.

The content is organised into a series of modules that progressively build your understanding, from core principles through to applying implementation science in complex, real-world settings.

Course Structure

The modules are grouped across three core areas:

  • Foundations of Implementation Science
Introduction to key concepts, principles, and the role of implementation science in achieving meaningful and sustained change.
  • Models, Theories, and Frameworks
Overview of commonly used implementation science frameworks and how they can be applied to guide planning, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Driving Change in Complex Settings
Exploration of how change occurs in real-world systems, including the role of context, leadership, and stakeholder engagement.

Each module includes focused learning objectives targeting specific aspects of implementation science, supporting both understanding and practical application.

Time Commitment

The course is estimated to take approximately 9 hours to complete, depending on your pace and level of engagement.

You may choose to:

  • Complete the course over a short, intensive period, or
  • Spread your learning across multiple sessions over time.

As a general guide, you might allocate 2–3 hours per session, though this is entirely flexible.

Certification

Upon completion of all core modules and quizzes, you will be awarded a certificate recognising your achievement in developing foundational capability in implementation science for real-world impact.

This certificate can be used to claim 9 Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points.

Your Learning Journey

To maximise your learning, we encourage you to:

  • Reflect on a current project, challenge, or idea for change
  • Consider how the concepts apply within your own context
  • Engage actively with activities and reflections

This approach will support you to move beyond understanding concepts, toward applying implementation science in practice.

Who Would Benefit from This Program?

This course is designed for individuals working across healthcare and related systems, including:

  • Clinicians and healthcare professionals
  • Managers and service leaders
  • Researchers and educators
  • Policy, administrative, and operational staff

It is suitable for individuals at any level who are involved in, or aspiring to support or lead, change initiatives within their organisation.

No prior experience or formal training in implementation science is required.

What Will You Gain from This Program?

Through this course, you will develop a practical understanding of implementation science and how to apply it to support meaningful, sustainable change in real-world settings.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Understand core concepts and approaches
Describe key principles, theories, and frameworks in implementation science and their relevance to real-world impact.
  • Apply implementation thinking in practice
Identify and adapt implementation strategies to suit different contexts, challenges, and stakeholder needs.
  • Work effectively within complex systems
Recognise the influence of context, systems, and diverse perspectives when planning and implementing change.
  • Approach evaluation as part of implementation
Select and apply appropriate evaluation approaches to understand what works, for whom, and in what settings.
  • Leverage data, innovation, and emerging approaches
Consider how technologies, data, and new ways of working can support implementation efforts.
  • Support change through leadership and collaboration
Engage stakeholders, foster collaboration, and contribute to sustainable implementation efforts.
  • Think in terms of learning systems
Apply principles of learning health systems to support continuous improvement and adaptation over time.
