Developmental Kit – My Emotions

Research project

The Developmental Kit is a series of brief intervention modules designed to support the mental health, development, and wellbeing of children, particularly those with neurodevelopmental disorders and/or disability.

About the project and our approach

The Developmental Kit is a series of parent-child psychological interventions. The first module, My Emotions, is designed to help children and their parents to develop emotional awareness and regulation skills and is being evaluated currently. Other modules being developed include support for parents and carers, family relationships, eating, self-determination, and support to overcome the barriers accessing school and community activities. The Developmental Kit modules are complemented by our partner research programs, Sleeping Sound Autism and Joy of moving program in Australia.

The modules within the Developmental Kit draw on cognitive behavioural strategies that have been developed collaboratively with families through clinical practice.

All modules within the Developmental Kit offer:

  • Personalised Assessment and Intervention: Working collaboratively with each child and family to tailor the intervention to their needs.
  • Parental Involvement: Valuing the important role parents play in their child's development. Actively engaging parents in the intervention process, offering them the knowledge and tools to support their child's development.
  • Practical Techniques: Providing accessible, actionable activities that can be integrated into daily life by each child and family.

Pilot randomised control trials to determine the feasibility, acceptability and efficacy of the Developmental Kit interventions are being conducted in our research-integrated Turner Child Youth and Family Clinic. Client feedback through co-design initiatives is also sought and evaluated regularly to further inform the interventions.
