Welcoming Dr Ruth Park-Jones: Strengthening the path from discovery to impact

Ruth Park Jones

The Monash Institute of Medical Engineering (MIME) is pleased to welcome Dr Ruth Park-Jones to Monash Innovation as Senior Director of Commercialisation.

With nearly two decades of experience across research translation, intellectual property and industry engagement, Ruth brings deep expertise and energy to the Monash ecosystem. Her appointment signals an exciting opportunity to further strengthen the partnership between MIME and Monash Innovation – ensuring that world-class research is translated into real-world health impact.

A career at the intersection of research and impact >

Ruth’s career has been shaped by a strong foundation in science and a passion for translating discovery into real-world outcomes. She began her journey with a PhD in pharmacology and immunology, initially intending to pursue a traditional academic pathway.

A pivotal moment came when she became involved in the licensing of a therapeutic technology to a European pharmaceutical company. This experience sparked her interest in commercialisation and led her to transition into the field – joining what was then Melbourne Ventures at the University of Melbourne.

From there, Ruth built her career across both business development and technology transfer, gaining experience in structuring deals, supporting industry partnerships and guiding intellectual property strategy. She further strengthened her expertise by undertaking formal training in intellectual property law.

Most recently, Ruth served as Director of Commercialisation at the University of Melbourne,  where she led teams of commercial and Intellectual Property professionals managing the commercialisation of technologies from across the University's entire portfolio. Her career has been defined by working closely with researchers, building high-performing teams, and navigating the complex interface between academia and industry.

From discovery to impact: a shared mission

At the heart of MIME is a commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration – bringing together engineering, medicine, IT, design and industry to solve complex healthcare challenges. This mission aligns closely with Monash Innovation, which plays a critical role in taking discoveries beyond the University.

“Monash Innovation is all about getting amazing ideas out of the University and into the hands of those who can develop them further – whether that’s industry partners or startups,” Ruth explains.

“Universities don’t manufacture devices or deliver therapies at scale – commercialisation is how we ensure research reaches the people who need it.”

This shared focus makes the relationship between MIME and Monash Innovation essential. By working together, researchers are better supported to navigate the complex journey from idea to implementation.

Why commercialisation matters for researchers

For many researchers, translating a discovery into a product, service or clinical solution can feel unfamiliar. Ruth acknowledges that commercialisation is often seen as a “black box” – but one she is determined to open.

“Commercialisation is a different way of delivering impact. Publishing and collaboration remain critical, but this is another pathway – one that can extend the reach of research in powerful ways,” she says.

Key challenges for those seeking to deliver impact through translation include:

  • Understanding the commercialisation process,
  • Navigating intellectual property and early consideration of regulatory requirements,
  • Identifying the right development, investment or industry partners, and
  • Managing the inherent risk of innovation, particularly in MedTech.

Ruth is passionate about addressing these barriers through greater transparency, education and early engagement.

Engaging early: a simple starting point

One of Ruth’s key messages to MIME researchers is clear: start the conversation early.

“When something feels exciting – when you think, ‘this could be something’ – that’s the time to reach out,” she says. “We want to work with the MIME team and our business development colleagues to support those early discussions, help shape the idea, and explore whether there’s a viable pathway forward.”

Researchers can engage with Monash Innovation through:

  • Early, informal conversations with the team,
  • Submitting an innovation disclosure, and/or
  • Connecting with your MIME and business development colleagues who can bring in Monash Innovation support when needed.

This early engagement can help clarify opportunities, avoid unnecessary complexity, and connect researchers with the right expertise at the right time.

The power of collaboration

Commercialisation thrives on collaboration, and Ruth is a strong advocate for cross-sector and interdisciplinary partnerships.

“Translating research into real-world solutions is a team effort – it requires researchers, clinicians, industry partners, investors and often expertise from across disciplines, including social sciences and law,” she says.

This is where MIME’s model stands out.

“The interdisciplinary nature of MIME creates enormous opportunity. Bringing together diverse expertise is exactly what’s needed to solve real-world problems and deliver impactful MedTech solutions.”

A growing partnership

Ruth is enthusiastic about deepening the connection between MIME and Monash Innovation.

“If anything, we want to dial it up,” she says. “There’s a real opportunity to build stronger pipelines, create more visibility around commercialisation, and proactively connect researchers with industry and development pathways.”

Over the next 12 to 18 months, her priorities include:

  • Increasing visibility and understanding of commercialisation across Monash,
  • Strengthening support structures for those interested in pursuing impact through commercialisation,
  • Building a robust pipeline of translational opportunities, and
  • Expanding connections with industry, investors and external partners.

Unlocking the potential of the Monash ecosystem

For Ruth, joining Monash represents a unique opportunity.

“The calibre and breadth of research at Monash is incredible – it’s a goldmine of opportunity,” she says. “There’s real momentum across the University to enhance how we deliver impact through commercialisation, and that’s incredibly exciting.”

For MIME researchers, this momentum – combined with a strong partnership with Monash Innovation – creates a powerful platform to translate ideas into outcomes that improve lives.
