In partnership with Safer Care Victoria and the Australian MedTech Manufacturing Centre, MIME recognised that many people in our ecosystem ask these and related questions often, and indeed are stuck on what to do next. Why? Because knowing how to ‘do medical innovation’ is not intuitive, and we’re never taught best practice!

Based on the world-renowned ‘Stanford Biodesign’ methodology, MIME and the Monash Med Tech Lab developed our “Foundations of Medical Technology Innovation” online module as a no-barrier, freely accessible learning platform to teach the fundamental principles of Biodesign.

The module is intended to be accessible for people with no background in this area, is entirely self-paced and will take approximately 6-8 hours to complete. At its core is the belief that innovation isn't magic, but rather a rigorous process that can be learned, practiced and perfected.

During the module you will learn to:

  • Articulate the core concepts and the initial phases of the Biodesign process.
  • Evaluate and learn from real-world case studies in which Biodesign principles have been successfully applied to a clinical need.
  • Apply the initial stages of Biodesign, to identify the best clinical need and develop initial prototypes.

Across five sub-modules you will cover:

  • Strategic Focus and Unmet Clinical Need
  • Needs Research and Exploration
  • Needs Screening
  • Concept Ideation and Prototyping
  • Concept Screening

After completing the module, you will be ready to learn more about the final stage of Biodesign - implementation. This is often the most challenging, but also the most rewarding stage of being a clinical innovator. We cover all you need to know about implementation in our Medical Technology Strategy Masterclasses.
