Our story
Since 1974, when the David Syme Business School of Banking and Finance was established at Monash University, we have been preparing future business leaders, and banking and finance professionals and academics. We now have over fifty full-time academic staff who teach across our undergraduate, graduate and honours programs.
We also offer a vibrant research culture enhanced by our Doctoral program. Our PhD students experience a rigorous training in empirical finance where the first year is spent undertaking higher level coursework units, as well as advanced training in econometrics and economics.
Teaching excellence
Monash Business School fosters a strong teaching environment. Our staff are regularly the recipients of the Dean’s Awards for Teaching Excellence, which recognises innovative teaching approaches that influence, motivate and inspire students to learn. Our classes focus on applying theory to real industry examples and are designed to encourage students to develop critical thinking skills.
Our resources
Monash Business School offers excellent infrastructure and facilities to complement our teaching. The Department of Banking and Finance makes strong use of the school’s Simulated Teaching and Research Laboratory (STARLab). The purpose-built facility runs a suite of financial simulation programs to complement teaching by simulating financial environments and bringing concepts to life. The STARLab requires students to engage financial decision-making skills across equity markets, bond markets and portfolio management. It provides students with the opportunity to gain trading experience before entering the professional world.
We also subscribe to all major international and national financial databases. Empirical research is strongly supported with a database manager and a full range of statistical analysis software.
Graduate outcomes
At Monash Business School we believe our graduates should enter the workforce with a strong mix of applied theory and industry engagement. Our students have the option of choosing an industry-based learning elective during their degree. Practical placements include a range of organisations such as Deloitte, EY, PwC, Telstra or the big four Australian banks.
Professional business challenges
We encourage our students to participate in business challenges offered by industry partners and professional associations. Teams from Monash Business School have won the national finals and gone on internationally to represent Australia in the UBS Investment Banking Challenge.
