The ninth Monash Environmental Economics Workshop (MEEW) is proudly hosted by the Department of Economics at Monash Business School, Monash University.

The workshop's aim is to bring together researchers of sustainability, natural resources, energy, and the environment. Our research-intensive workshop will feature detailed presentations, discussions, and opportunities for interaction. In line with the workshop’s goals to build and strengthen our environmental economics community, MEEW 2025 will take place in-person in Melbourne on Thursday 27 and Friday 28 November 2025.

Keynote speaker

Kenneth GillinghamProfessor Kenneth Gillingham, Senior Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, Yale School of the Environment, Professor of Economics, Yale University

Prof Gillingham holds a primary appointment in the School of the Environment and secondary appointments in the Department of Economics, School of Management, and Jackson School of Global Affairs. In 2015-2016 he served as the Senior Economist for Energy and the Environment at the White House Council of Economic Advisers. He is an energy and environmental economist drawing from the fields of applied microeconomics, industrial organization, and energy modeling. Prof Gillingham’s research examines the adoption of new energy technologies, energy efficiency, quantitative policy and program analysis, and climate change policy.

Prof Ben Newell

Professor Ben Newell, University of New South Wales

Ben Newell is Professor of Behavioural Science in the School of Psychology at UNSW Sydney, and Director of the  UNSW Institute for Climate Risk & Response (ICRR).

His research focuses on the cognitive processes underlying judgment, choice and decision-making and the application of this knowledge to environmental, medical, financial and forensic contexts. His role in the new Institute is to drive an interdisciplinary research agenda bringing together expertise from behavioural science, climate science, economics and governance to address the risks and opportunities of climate change.

He has published multiple articles on the psychology of human judgment and decision making, including those that lie at the intersection of psychology and climate change, with particular focus on the understanding of uncertainty and risk. Ben is lead author of the books Straight Choices: The Psychology of Decision Making, and Open Minded: A Search for Truth about the Unconscious Mind. Ben is a member of the Academic Advisory Panel of the Behavioural Economics Team of the Australian Government (BETA), and the Chief Medical Officer’s advisory group for the National Health and Climate Strategy.

Asst/Prof Dahis is a senior lecturer whose Department of Economics at Monash University research interests lie at the intersection of politics, the environment, and development economics. His research has been published in journals such as the Review of Economics and Statistics and the Journal of Public Economics.
