With the emergence of AI, fintech and sustainability, finance education is now much more than capital budgeting, portfolio theory and option pricing.

Our opportunity set has multiplied, and so have our challenges. Embracing this new era of finance, the Department of Banking and Finance will, for the first time, provide an opportunity for Australian finance educators to meet and share their interest in this area.

The forum's theme is Modernising the Finance Curriculum, with speakers from Monash Business School, The University of Queensland, University of Tasmania and The University of Melbourne.

Coffee, tea and juice will be provided, followed by a change of scenery with lunch at The George on Collins Street.


Speakers

Ric Sotelo, Monash University, Headway Capital

Mr Sotelo has over 25 years of experience in corporate finance and strategy development.  He has substantial experience in mergers and acquisitions, project finance and capital raisings spanning corporate finance roles at several major industrial companies and in financial services.

Mr Sotelo is the founder and owner of the licenced corporate advisory firm Headway Capital. His qualifications include a Bachelor of Engineering in Chemical Engineering (First Class Honours) from the UNSW, an MBA from the University of Melbourne and a CPA.  Mr Sotelo is a Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, a Member of CPA Australia, and a Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers. A Monash University Industry Fellow, Mr Sotelo  applies his industry experience to a suite of units in the Master of Advanced Finance, including Project Finance, Mergers and Acquisitions and Case Studies in Finance.

Dr Mohamad Khaled, The University of Queensland (UQ)

Dr Khaled is an Econometrician and a Senior Lecturer at UQ's School of Economics. He publishes extensively in high-quality economics and statistics journals.

A highly experienced and passionate educator, Dr Khaled is playing a key role in reshaping the econometrics curriculum at UQ.

Dr Ekaterina Volkova, The University of Melbourne

Prior to joining The University of Melbourne's Department of Finance as a Senior Lecturer in 2017, Dr Volkova earned a PhD in Finance from the SC College of Business at Cornell University. Dr Volkova also holds an Master's in Mathematics from Moscow State University and a Master's in Economics from the New Economic School.

Dr Volkova's teaching expertise lies in data analysis, statistics, and corporate valuation. Her research focuses on topics related to corporate governance, monitoring, and government regulations. Specifically, her papers explore the effects of large shareholders on a company and the potential influence of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on pre-IPO firm disclosures.

Long Pham, Department of Banking and Finance

Mr Pham is a young, accomplished and dedicated professional with a passion for education, finance and technology. Having studied at Monash University and gained valuable industry experience, he brings a unique perspective to his role as a lecturer of practice.

Since joining Monash University, Mr Pham has leveraged his industry experience and actively utilised his programming skills to develop innovative solutions, provide invaluable insights and bring a practical and dynamic teaching approach to improve student learning experience. His ability to draw on real-world examples and practical applications helps students connect academic concepts to their future careers.

Dr Binh Do, Department of Banking and Finance

Dr Do is a Senior Lecturer in Finance with the Department of Banking and Finance.  Prior to joining Monash University in 2007, Dr Do worked for ANZ and Unilever for five years.

He has published in several leading international journals, including the Journal of Banking and Finance, Financial Analysts Journal, Journal of Futures Markets and Journal of Financial Research. He lectures in derivatives units and received the Dean's Commendation for Outstanding Teaching in 2011.

Associate Professor Dan Daugaard, University of Tasmania, Centre for Corporate Sustainability and Environmental Finance

Associate Professor Daugaard is the Deputy Director of the Centre for Corporate Sustainability and Environmental Finance. He is an honorary Associate Professor at Macquarie Business School and a full-time Associate Professor at the Tasmanian School of Business and Economics.

His current research includes: deciphering the drivers of global ESG outcomes, mapping planetary boundaries to SDG’s and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) methodologies, improving SRI performance evaluation, understanding reverse causation between financial and ESG success, SRI Fixed Income performance in periods of crisis, experimental testing of financial planner sustainability choices, and the impact of climate change on bank default risk.
