Welcome to the Faculty of Law at Monash University!
It's more than a degree. More than one of the world's best law schools. We will inspire you to listen, analyse, question and excel.
Why Monash Law?
- World-Class Education: Ranked among the top law schools globally, Monash Law offers a dynamic and comprehensive legal education that prepares you for a successful career.
- Innovative Research: Our faculty and students engage in cutting-edge research that addresses contemporary legal challenges and contributes to societal progress.
- Experiential Learning: Gain practical experience through our legal clinics, social justice initiatives, and partnerships with the legal profession.
- Global Opportunities: With campuses and academic networks worldwide, Monash Law provides unparalleled opportunities for international study and collaboration.
- Monash Law Students Society (LSS): One of Australia’s largest student-run organisations, the LSS provides support, guidance and connection for all Monash Law students.
Our Faculty is more than a top-tier academic institution — it aims to be a force for societal good. Monash Law tackles critical challenges head-on, from critical First Nations’ and children’s rights highlighted at the Castan Centre’s 2024 annual conference to groundbreaking AI and law research led and developed by the Centre for Commercial Law and Regulatory Studies. Faculty impact extends to shaping policy, like Associate Professor Yee-Fui Ng and Professor Luke Beck’s recent contributions to the federal Truth in Political Advertising legislation. The depth and drive behind our scholarship inspire me — and I hope they’ll inspire you too. As Sir John Monash, for whom our university is named, advised students, we want you to ‘equip yourself for life, not solely for your own benefit, but for the benefit of the whole community.’
One of the cores of Monash Law’s teaching philosophy is our Clinical Guarantee, the first of its kind in Australia. This Guarantee ensures that all undergraduate students will have the opportunity to participate in clinical legal education, gaining hands-on experience while grappling with real-world legal challenges. Through the Monash Law Clinics, you will learn to translate theory into practice, cultivate professional skills, and contribute directly to justice in action.
Our Programs
- Undergraduate Degrees: Explore our diverse range of double-degree programs designed to equip you with the foundational knowledge and skills for a career in law and more.
- Postgraduate Studies: Advance your expertise with our specialized postgraduate programs, including the Master of Laws (LLM) and Juris Doctor (JD).
- Research Degrees: Pursue your passion for legal research with our PhD programs, supported by leading scholars and state-of-the-art facilities.
We are also a Faculty that values and celebrates diversity and innovation. From the award-winning research of Dr Jess Mant, Deputy Director of the Australian Centre for Justice Innovation, on accessibility in the legal system to our hosting of the first-ever Commonwealth Court sitting at a university, we are constantly pushing the boundaries of what legal research, education, and practice can achieve.

Wherever you move on to after your degree — legal practice, the judiciary, work in and for government, activism and the third sector, the many worlds of corporate finance, and beyond — your time at Monash Law will equip you to contribute meaningfully. To do this, we are committed to providing you with the resources and support you need to succeed; and I encourage you to explore our state-of-the-art facilities, comprehensive career services, and our global exchange programs.
As a graduate of Monash Law you will join a truly world-spanning alumni network. As of January 2025, Monash Law alumni occupy prominent legal roles including The Chief Justice, Chief Magistrate, President of the Children’s Court, Coroner, and Solicitor General. Professor Mick Dodson AM, who was the first Indigenous person to graduate from law in Australia, completed his degree in the Faculty in 1974 and has had a distinguished and repeatedly recognised career as a solicitor and barrister in native title and human rights. Jan Adams AO PSM, the former Australian Ambassador to Japan and to China completed her LLB at Monash Law in 1992. Last September, Catherine Zhou — who graduated from the Faculty in 2022 — was the recipient of a Rhodes Scholarship (a prestigious award given to just nine Australians each year, enabling the recipient to pursue graduate study at the University of Oxford).
As you embark on this new chapter, I encourage you to seize the opportunities before you: engage deeply with your studies, participate in clinics and moots, and connect with the vibrant Monash Law community (academics, students, alumni, the people who live, work, and play near our campuses, practitioners, and many others). The challenges you encounter will be as essential to your growth as the successes you achieve.
Together, we will continue to advance Monash Law’s legacy as a Faculty that values positive social change through law, that fosters innovation, and that remains steadfastly committed to making a difference.
Welcome to the Monash Law family. I am excited to see the path you carve for yourself and the impact you will undoubtedly make.
From exploring your options, to shaping a career, we're here to support you on your journey.
