Making the most of Moodle

Getting started with Moodle

If you are a beginner with Moodle, this is the workshop for you. Don’t know your Dashboard from your Grader report? What is the difference between a Group and a Grouping? Come along to find out more about the basics of Moodle. Questions welcome! After completing this workshop, you’ll be able to find your way around your Moodle site and begin teaching with it.

Students respond to well-structured and signposted Moodle sites. Learn different methods and approaches for setting up your Moodle unit so that both you and your students find it easy to use, navigate and get work done. This workshop will look at and discuss examples of sites from different faculties across Monash.

Creating interactive activities using H5P

H5P is a set of tools you can use to create a range of engaging online activities and resources for your students. Learn about the functions of H5P interactive tools, how to use them in your teaching and how to build them in Moodle.

Recording video with Panopto

Video can be used to communicate complex ideas and to connect with students. This workshop will take you through the basics of connecting Panopto to your unit, recording and editing with Panopto desktop recorder including adding captions and interactive content such as quizzes. Learn how to use video to present content, give feedback and introduce yourself to students.

Interactive Online Workshops

This workshop will focus on structuring, designing and delivering learning activities in online synchronous workshops. We will look at how to use multiple technologies together including Zoom, Moodle and Google Drive to create activities and how to best use them in combination.

If you are scheduled in a Livestream venue, you can access this training in the lead-up to semester to ensure that you are familiar with the technology, aware of the support in place and find out useful tips for presentation practices including discussion moderation to engage online students.

Inform Your Teaching with Data

You have collected the data for student engagement, but what does it mean? Bring along some of your data from Moodle reports and Panopto. During this workshop we will look at how to collate data into something meaningful. We will discuss how to use the data to identify at-risk students to improve student engagement. We will also explore data trends to improve the learner experience.

FeedbackFruits Pilot

FeedbackFruits is a suite of tools within Moodle that allows students to share their work, give and receive feedback and grades, and gives a platform for educators to also provide feedback and allow for student interaction. In 2020, Monash Education Innovation is piloting FeedbackFruits to support assessment, feedback and interactivity.

Interactive Materials

The Interactive tools allow educators to share documents, video and audio for student collaboration (e.g., discussions, practice questions). If required, student interactions can be graded.

Comprehension

The Comprehension tool allows educators to guide students in the systematic comprehension of materials through predetermined topics and prompts. Annotations of peers can be made visible to allow for collaborative study.

Discussion Assignment

Discussion Assignment allows educators to structure online discussion for students, allowing for interaction and review of peer input. Students can comment and upvote on other students’ contributions and educators can also engage with students to guide the discussion.
