Postoperative pneumonia prediction tool

Project overview

Patients undergoing open heart surgery are prone to developing post-operative respiratory infections in the few days after surgery. Early antibiotic treatment may help to reduce these impacts, but choosing to start antibiotics before an infection becomes obvious should only occur in selected high-risk patients. This is due to the risk of developing antimicrobial resistance. Therefore, it is vital to accurately predict whether a patient will develop post-operative pneumonia, to safely start preventative treatment. This project is developing a prediction tool which uses AI to assess patient early post-operative clinical parameters to predict whether they will develop post-operative pneumonia.
