What is the application closing date?
There is no closing date for applications, however we do encourage you to apply as early as possible to ensure the greatest opportunity in securing accommodation. If there are too many applications we may close off the opportunity to apply, so we encourage you to get in early.
Is there an application fee?
There is no cost to apply for on-campus accommodation. Only once you are made an offer that you wish to accept are you required to make a non-refundable deposit payment to secure your room.
I am currently a Year 12 student in Australia. Do I have to wait till I get my results before I apply for accommodation?
You can apply for on-campus accommodation before you get your results or your offer to study at Monash. There is no application fee and we encourage you to apply for accommodation as soon as possible to ensure the greatest opportunity of securing accommodation.
Can I apply for both the Residential Village and the Urban Community?
You can only have one application at a time. However, you will have the opportunity to list your preferences when you apply and if you are not successful in receiving your first choice, your application will be transferred for consideration to your next preference.
Before you commence your application, we encourage you to choose your campus, your preferred style of accommodation (either Halls of Residence, Shared Apartments or Studios) and check out the different features of each hall which will help you in making an informed decision. It is also important to review the Admissions Policy We encourage you to apply for your preferred residence as early as possible.
Do you give preference to certain groups of students?
Applications for on-campus accommodation are assessed as per the Admissions Policy, 4.0 Admissions priority. We encourage you to apply as early as possible to increase your chances of securing on-campus accommodation.
I am under the age of 18 at the time of completing my application, do I need to provide any other documentation?
Not at the time of application, however if you are successful in receiving an offer of accommodation, and you are still under the age of 18 years you will be sent an 'Accommodation for under 18-year-old residents at a Monash Residential Services complex' form which your parents/guardian and you will be required to complete.
How can I apply for a male or female only hall?
While most of our accommodation facilities are mixed, there is an option for single-gender areas/floors/clusters within a hall.
In all residences, everyone has their own private lockable bedroom. If it is important for you to live in a gender specific area/floor/cluster, Monash Residential Services may be able to assist you. You could choose the Shared Apartments options in Clayton such as the South East Flats or the Shared Apartments at Peninsula Village. Make sure that in the 'additional preferences/requests' section of the application form you state your requirement for a single gender apartment.
At Clayton some halls have single-gender areas/floors/clusters. Make sure you advise us of your preference for single-gender accommodation in your application form. Alternatively, you can contact us on mrs.applications@monash.edu and your application will be updated to reflect your preference.
How can I apply for an en-suite room?
If it is important for you to have a room with an en-suite, you should consider applying for a Studio apartment. You should consider the difference in the cost of each of these options as rates do vary.
In the Halls of Residence, there are a very limited number of en-suite rooms. These rooms are only offered at a later date once we have addressed the requirements of all our current residents, so we cannot be sure that your request will be fulfilled.
Another option would be the South East Flats at the Clayton campus, or the shared houses/units at the Peninsula Residential Village which will give you the option to share a bathroom with only your flatmates.
I want to be close to my friend, how do I put this in the application?
We understand that it can be daunting when you leave home for uni and that your friends can be a great support to you. If you are applying for a shared house/flat include the Clayton South East Flats or the Peninsula Residential Village you will have the option to include your friend preference during your application.
If you are applying for halls, you and your friend can both contact us at mrs.applications@monash.edu to advise and we will update your application to reflect your preference.
We will do our best to assign you and your friend a room close to each other, but cannot guarantee.
Can I choose my room and hall?
At Monash Residential Services on campus accommodation, only the Studio Apartments at Clayton and Peninsula Campus offer an opportunity for current residents to choose their own room. For successful applicants at these halls, you will be invited to select your room via an email, and you will have 7 days to complete this process. In the final round of offers where there is limited availability of studio apartments, the Admissions Office will pre-select a studio apartment for you.
At the Residential Village (Clayton) and Shared Apartments (Clayton and Peninsula), the rooms are assigned by the College Heads prior to arrival and they will take into account your preferences. As outlined in our Admissions Policy, and stated in our Mission Goals, Monash Residential Services will endeavour to ensure that each residence maintains a vibrant, positive and diverse community of residents.
Whilst Monash Residential Services will do all in their power to ensure that your first preference is met, we are bound by availability and cannot assure you that your first preference will be met.
Will Monash Residential Services consider my special requests for room preferences in my application?
Of course! At Monash Residential Services, we take your special requests into consideration when we are processing your application. During your application process, please add your request in the Accommodation Options section and we will do our best to meet your request. Please note that you will be limited to 50 characters - you need to be short and concise!

Can you transfer my application to next semester/year?
If you have decided that you will not be starting your studies until Semester 2, then you can transfer your application from Semester 1 to Semester 2 very easily! Just send a quick email to us at mrs.applications@monash.edu and we will update your application for you. Once offers for Semester 2 are ready to be sent out, you will receive an email update on your application. However, applications cannot be transferred from one calendar year to another.

How many people share a bathroom and kitchen in the Halls of Residence Clayton?
Our Halls of Residence at the Residential Village Clayton Campus offer a great social environment which allows for greater peer interaction. You will share a kitchen, lounge and bathroom with other students on your floor. This number will vary by hall, but to get a better idea, please check out this quick guide!
Are meals included in the price? Do you provide meal plans?
At Monash Residential Services, your meals are not included in the rental rates, although all of your amenities such as gas, electricity, water, internet and residential support are! We are very lucky to have a large number of eating places on campus, as well as the Halls Cafe (Clayton Campus only) so you will be spoiled for choice! Plus there are plenty of Halls events throughout the year where the residents can get free food!
