ANZCA Composition Scholarship

ABOUT
The ANZCA Composition Scholarship is a commission prize of $1,500.00 awarded to a current Monash music student. The awardee will be commissioned to compose a short solo piano piece of 3–5 mins duration at a standard of ANZCA grade range 6–8 for potential inclusion in the ANZCA piano syllabus, to be completed by February 2026. The awardee will be invited to perform the composition at a public event in March 2026 (dates TBC) presented by ANZCA Music Examinations. Alternatively, the awardee may nominate a pianist colleague to perform the work on their behalf, in consultation with the Head of Piano Aura Go.

ELIGIBILITY
To apply you must be a current Monash student in the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music (BMus, Honours).
SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Complete this google form and provide:
- A short biography (max. 200 words).
- An accessible link to a recent photo.
- A Google Drive or Dropbox link to scores (PDF) and recordings (may be video, audio from live performance or an audio realisation) of up to 3 instrumental compositions, including at least one solo piano piece or work featuring a prominent piano part. If you have not composed a solo or chamber work for piano before, you are encouraged to submit a newly composed excerpt for piano to demonstrate your potential to successfully undertake this commission.
- A personal statement: tell us about your relationship with the piano, and what being awarded this commission would mean to you. (Eg. What are the compositional/pianistic ideas you would like to explore through this piece? What would this commission and performance opportunity mean for your professional development as a composer? (max. 200 words).
CONDITIONS
- Commission to be completed by February 2026.
- The recipient's biography, photo and personal statement will be shared with the sponsor as required.
- Publicity will include, but not be limited to, published feature article of recipient in the ANZCA teacher magazine (early December 2025).
- Payment of prize to be processed upon announcement of successful recipient.
- The recipient will be required to complete a Student acknowledgement form confirming acceptance of the terms of the Scholarship.
- Performance of commissioned work at the ANZCA Graduation Ceremony and Concert March 2026 (date TBC).
- The recipient is required to submit a brief report (300 words) on their completed composition by 1 March 2026.

SELECTION CRITERIA
The application will be judged on the following criteria:
- Compositional quality of submitted works
- Demonstrated aptitude for writing effectively for the piano
- Clarity of intent in the personal statement
