Audition process

The auditions process is in two stages:

Stage 1 - Submission of an audition and a form which provides information on your music experience (applicable to all applicants); and
Stage 2 - Callback interview (by invitation only).

To commence the process, all applicants must register for an audition. After registration, you will receive an email that contains Stage 1 instructions including:

information on how to submit your audition video or folio; and
a form for completion that requires you to provide information on your music experience.

Once your audition submission (Stage 1) has been assessed, you will receive an email advising of your audition submission outcome, including if you have progressed to Stage 2. Not all applicants will be invited to a callback interview (stage 2).

Please note, Bachelor of Music specialisations have limited places.

Bachelor of Music

- Before you register for an audition, check that you meet course entry requirements and apply through VTAC
- Complete the Online Shop Audition Registration Form by the due date (audition schedule page)
- When registering, don’t forget to include your VTAC number
- After registration, you will receive an email with instructions on how to submit your audition video or folio, and a form for completion that requires you to provide information on your music experience.
- Before you register for an audition, apply for a course transfer
- Complete the Online Shop Audition Registration Form by the due date (audition schedule page)
- When registering, don’t forget to include your Monash Student ID number
- After registration, you will receive an email with instructions on how to submit your audition video or folio, and a form for completion that requires you to provide information on your music experience.
- Before you register for an audition, follow the steps for a current Monash College student application
- Complete the Online Shop Audition Registration Form by the due date (audition schedule page)
- When registering, don’t forget to include your Monash Student ID number
- After registration, you will receive an email with instructions on how to submit your audition video or folio, and a form for completion that requires you to provide information on your music experience.

Bachelor of Music (Hons)

- Before you register for an audition, apply for the Bachelor of Music (Honours) by following the instructions on the Monash Arts Honours webpage
- Complete the Online Shop Audition Registration Form by the due date (audition schedule page)
- When registering, don’t forget to include your Monash Student ID number
- After registration, you will receive an email with instructions on how to submit your audition video or folio and a form for completion that requires you to provide information on your music experience.

Stage 1 - Preparing for your audition submission

To find out about the audition submission requirements for each area - Music Performance (Classical or Jazz), Popular Music or Composition and Music Technology - visit the audition requirements page.

The School can provide a list of recommended accompanists for your audition submission however you are welcome to use a backing track. To request a list of accompanists, ask MoVA, our virtual assistant.

Stage 2 - Callback interviews

Once your audition submission has been reviewed by our academic staff, you will be advised via email of your audition submission outcome, including if you have progressed to Stage 2.

Not all applicants will be invited to a callback interview. Applicants who are interviewed will be notified of the interview outcome.

Depending on your instrument/stream you may be required to attend your interview either in person or online as follows:

Composition and Music Technology: online via Zoom
Music Performance – Classical: in-person at the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music and Performance at Monash Clayton Campus*
Music Performance – Jazz: online via Zoom
Popular Music: in person at the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music and Performance at Monash Clayton Campus*

* if you cannot attend in person, in exceptional circumstances an online interview can be arranged.

Frequently asked questions

I have registered for an audition. What happens next?
Within a week of registering you will receive an email confirming the receipt of your registration.
This confirmation email will contain instructions on how to submit your audition video or folio, and a form for completion that requires you to provide information on your music experience.

I missed the recommended registration date outlined in the Audition Schedule, am I still able to register?
Yes, you can still register. The recommended registration dates are listed to support applicants receiving a timely response. If you register after the recommended date but within the audition application timeframe, your application will still be considered, however if you are granted an interview, there may be little flexibility for rescheduling.
Can I register to audition for multiple instruments?
Yes, you can. When registering you need to select each instrument (and relevant stream) (e.g. Jazz Piano, Classical Piano and Classical Flute) noting that:
- Each instrument/stream requires a separate audition registration and thus each attracts a $70 fee*.
- If accepted into the course, you will major in only one instrument/stream. If you pass the audition for more than one instrument/stream, you will need to confirm which you will be studying before the start of your first semester.

When are the auditions/interviews held?
For Semester 1 entry:
- Audition registration is usually open from September to December.
- If you are invited to an interview, these will usually take place mid-September or December depending on when you registered.
- Registration after Change of Preference is possible with the audition process conducted January to early February.
For Semester 2 entry:
- Audition registration is usually open from April to June.
- If you are invited to an interview, these will usually take place in July.

What does the audition/interview involve?
As audition requirements may vary, ensure that you read through the audition requirements information.
Can the School assist in finding me an accompanist for the audition submission?
The School can provide a list of recommended accompanists for your audition submission if requested, however you are welcome to use a backing track.

Will I receive feedback on any part of the audition process?
Unfortunately, due to the large volume of auditions we receive, we are unable to provide applicants with individual feedback on the audition process.
When will I find out if I have passed the audition process?
This is dependent on what round you are in and whether you are invited to a callback interview. For advice on the likely date, please visit the Audition Schedule page.
When you receive your Stage 1 instructions email you will be advised when you can expect to be notified of the outcome.
If you are invited to a Stage 2 callback interview you will be notified of the outcome within five working days of the interview.
All audition outcome notification emails will be sent to the email address you provided on the online audition registration form.
There are multiple rounds for VTAC entry. Am I required to make an audition submission to all these rounds?
You only need to make an audition submission to one of the rounds. We offer multiple rounds in order to cover a range of dates and give everyone the opportunity to audition and be advised of their outcome in time to adjust their VTAC preferences if necessary.
I am on holiday during the Stage 2 - Callback interview period. Can this be accommodated?
Due to the volume of applications received, we cannot accommodate individual interview schedule requests. It is recommended that you ensure that you are available for the whole of the relevant interview period.
If however due to extenuating circumstances you cannot attend your scheduled interview time, please follow the advice provided in the confirmation email to request alternate arrangements.
I have an in person Callback interview but I don’t live in Melbourne. Can I do my interview online?
If you are in rural Victoria/interstate/overseas and unable to travel to Melbourne for your interview, we can arrange an online interview instead.
I’ve changed my mind about applying for Music but have already registered for an audition. Can I get a refund?
Yes, ask MoVA, our virtual assistant to cancel your audition and request a refund of the audition fee. You must cancel your audition at least 24 hours before your scheduled time to be eligible for a refund.
If I successfully complete the audition, are there any other course entry requirements I need to meet?
Yes. In addition to a successful audition, you also need to meet English language requirements and academic entry requirements. For further information visit our respective Find a course page: Domestic applicants or International applicants.
Please note that admission to this course is competitive and applicants may need to meet a higher requirement than the minimum requirements stated, to be offered a place.
How long is my successful audition outcome valid?
Successful audition outcomes are valid for 12 months. For example, if you successfully passed the audition for:
- Semester 1 2026 intake but did not enrol in the course, you will need to audition again for the Semester 1 2027 intake.
- Semester 2 2026 intake but did not enrol in the course, you will need to audition again for mid-year 2027 intake.
