CMT and Composition Prize

OVERVIEW
The Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music and Performance is pleased to offer the CMT and Composition Prize in 2025. The prize will be awarded to the best submission of a work for instrument/s and electronics. The prize consists of a certificate, a cash payment and a presentation of the winning work in a public concert in 2026 which will be recorded.
PRIZE
This year's prize will be awarded as $1000 one winner or $600 each for joint prize winners.
ELIGIBILITY
This prize is open to Monash University undergraduate students enrolled in the Bachelor of Music (CMT stream).
SELECTION CRITERIA
The application will be judged on the following criteria:
- Artistic quality of proposal
- Conceptual coherence/interest
- Contextual understanding of Decibel New Music Ensemble (have you checked out their past work?)
- Demonstrated knowledge of orchestration/instrumentation
- Quality of past work
SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
The applicant shall submit, via THIS form:
- A proposal for a 7-8 min work, detailing a conceptual and musical plan (200 words max)
- An example of your past work (5 minutes max)
The submission must include electronics and feature one, some or all of bass flute, bass clarinet/clarinet, cello, percussion (bass drum), viola and electronics (which can be sound embedded in the score).

Applications due: Friday, 14 November 2025, 5pm (AEST)
Notification of application outcome: Friday, 28 November 2025
REPORTING
The recipient of the award is required to submit a brief report (300 words) on their activities and accomplishments in relation to the proposed works by 1 March 2026.
