As we commemorate a decade since the passing of esteemed alumnus Nicholas Auden, Monash University continues to uphold his legacy of educational excellence and global citizenship through the Nicholas Auden International Study Scholarship.

Established during Monash Law Faculty’s 50th Anniversary in 2014, the scholarship has empowered several students to pursue transformative educational opportunities abroad, reflecting Auden’s own distinguished academic journey.

The scholarship has been designed to support Monash Law students in undertaking a one-year pathways program in the United Kingdom. With nine scholarships awarded to date, we asked the latest recipient, Campbell Russell, to share some insights into his profound experience.

Speaking on the impact of the scholarship, Campbell expressed gratitude for the opportunity that it provided him to pursue a Master of Law (LLM) at the University of Cambridge, specialising in Public International Law.

“It was my honour to be awarded the 2023–24 Nicholas Auden International Study Scholarship. I had the privilege of engaging in classes with leading academics, each renowned and active in their fields yet still maintaining exceptionally high teaching standards,” said Campbell Russell.

Campbell has participated in enriching extracurricular activities, and immersed himself fully in the vibrant academic environment. He’s also had the privilege of meeting Nick’s wife Amy Auden during his studies.

His experience at Cambridge has included joining the prestigious Cambridge Union for debates, contributing to international law journals, and engaging in pro-bono work for human rights initiatives—an array of activities made possible through the scholarship's support.

Looking ahead, Monash University aims to secure the future of the Nicholas Auden International Study Scholarship through an endowment campaign. The tenth scholarship recipient will be announced later this year.

With all of the initial funding now allocated, the University seeks to establish a $1.1 million endowment to sustain the scholarship in perpetuity. This will ensure future generations of students can benefit from similar life-changing opportunities.

Professor Marilyn Pittard, Interim Dean of the Faculty of Law at Monash University, invites our community and philanthropic partners to join us in preserving this legacy and empowering future leaders like Campbell Russell.

"Through the Nicholas Auden International Study Scholarship, we are committed to continuing to honour Nick’s unwavering dedication to the pursuit of justice, and tireless commitment to educational opportunity. We remain deeply grateful to our philanthropic community, whose generous contributions have made this impactful scholarship possible," said Prof Pittard.

Amy Auden, reflecting on her late husband's legacy and the scholarship's impact, expresses gratitude for the initiative.

"Nick would be so thrilled to know of the scholarship in his name, and absolutely honoured to know that he is playing a part in helping others reach their full potential," said Ms Auden.
