Monash University is launching its 2014 annual appeal to alumni on 30 April. The aim of the appeal is to raise support for student scholarships, breakthrough research and Monash libraries.

Acting Director of Alumni Engagement Catherine Palmer said that this year’s appeal includes two key components – the telethon and a mailing.

“The telethon – also known as a phone outreach campaign – aims to reconnect alumni with the University and hear their views, seek participation in the fundraising appeal, and update contact and professional details,” said Ms Palmer.

“The telethon campaign will run from late April to December with around 60 student callers connecting with 45,000 alumni. This is the first time Monash has run a telethon for alumni on such a large scale.”

The telethon will be complemented by a direct mail campaign. A letter from the Chancellor Dr Alan Finkel AM will be sent to selected alumni in Australia and in specific overseas locations from May to align with the relevant pre-tax periods.

The Chancellor writes: “Your support is vital to Monash as we pursue our ambition to change lives and save lives. Students who thrive thanks to scholarships will go on to be leaders. Our research is undoubtedly making a positive impact on the world, through solutions. And the Monash libraries are our community hubs of education and research.”

The letter also tells the story of alumna Bianca McLachlan who received a scholarship in 2013 for the final year of her Bachelor of Nursing. The scholarship was transformational for Bianca.

"Being awarded the scholarship made a huge difference to my life. It was a huge relief, reduced the stress I was feeling about my finances and allowed me to concentrate on my course,” said Ms McLachlan.
