Vice-Chancellor’s visit to Indonesia
Vice-Chancellor’s visit to Indonesia
Last month, Monash University President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Margaret Gardner AO, met with Monash alumni, industry and government representatives on her first official visit to Indonesia.
There are over 3,700 Monash alumni currently based in Indonesia; some joined Professor Gardner at dinner and reception events where they learned about Monash alumni activities. It was also an opportunity to share their experiences since graduating from Monash and talk about their favourite stories about their time on campus.
The Vice-Chancellor visited industry representatives and Indonesian educational leaders, and future alumni and their parents at Jakarta International College, a partner of Monash College. These education professionals are the next leaders who will help shape Monash’s engagement and drive opportunities for innovation and collaboration in the country.
At a dinner hosted by Professor Gardner, Professor Ariel Heryanto, Monash University’s Herb Feith Professor for the Study of Indonesia, spoke to alumni about the history of Indonesian development and the balance between material and cultural development in the country. With an academic career spanning over 30 years, Professor Heryanto is one of the world’s most influential analysts of contemporary popular culture and radical political movements in Indonesia.
Monash Caulfield campus is home to the Australia Indonesia Centre – a joint initiative of the Australian and Indonesian governments that is a consortium of eleven highly respected research institutions. Following the opening of the Monash Indonesia Representative Office (MIRO) in Jakarta last year, the Vice-Chancellor’s visit continues to strengthen the relationship between Indonesia and Monash.
With a population of over 250 million people, Indonesia is a significant economic and regional partner for Australia, and for Monash, and we are committed to growing our alumni presence in the country
Indonesia based Monash alumni who are interested in our alumni activities or wish to update their contact details for inclusion in future alumni activity can contact Monash Alumni for more information at monashalumni@monash.edu.
