About the Lab
The Sound Collectors Lab was founded by percussionist and artistic researcher Dr Louise Devenish in 2020, to facilitate cross-disciplinary collaboration between researchers and practitioners in music, visual art, design, technology, and science. Our practice-led artistic research projects advance research investigating the role of music in responding to the global challenges of our time, and how engaging with these issues innovates music practice. We champion music as a powerful form of thought and communication, by researching and developing new modes and materials for collaborative music creation, apply them in new musical works, and critically reflect on these practices and methodologies through public performances, recordings, talks and scholarly publications. The Lab focuses on 3 interconnected key research themes: 1) percussion performance, presentation and pedagogy, 2) post-instrumental practice, and 3) environmental and climate communication through music. Our practice-led artistic research projects weave these themes together to advance research investigating the role of music in responding to the global challenges of our time, and how engaging with these issues innovates music practice.
