Climate Vocabularies: New methodologies for music and science communication
One of the major challenges in tackling the climate crisis today is effectively communicating scientific knowledge. Climate Vocabularies proposes a radical shift to artistic climate communication, positioning music in a driving role in science communication. This 3-year ARC Discovery project is led by an interdisciplinary team of music, science and communication researchers investigating the role of music in climate communication. By working with leading musicians and scientists, Climate Vocabularies explores how music can enhance science storytelling to create more compelling and emotionally resonant climate messaging, and how arts-science collaboration can lead to innovations in creative practice. This research will entangle music and science researchers at all stages of this experimental process and reshape the possibilities for musicians and scientists to work together. It will do so by developing, testing, and sharing an innovative framework for transdisciplinary collaboration between music and climate science that enhances the capacities of both fields for climate messaging towards action. Aligned with the 2023 National Cultural Policy REVIVE and the Australian National Science and Research Priorities, this project offers new ways to engage with global challenges.
