The Department of Accounting is renowned for its high quality research and teaching. We have a vibrant and collaborative research culture, supported by excellent infrastructure and strong links to the professional community.
Monash Business School offers excellent infrastructure and facilities to complement our research and teaching. For example, we make strong use of the School’s Behavioural Laboratory to carry out new research into judgement and decision-making.
An example of this is our recent research into physiological responses to assess if auditors have the right amount of professional skepticism to determine whether a company is being truthful about its financial circumstances.
We are dedicated to providing our students with the best accounting educational experience to prepare them to operate effectively in a global environment.
The School fosters a strong teaching environment with its annual Dean’s Awards for Teaching Excellence. Our staff are regular recipients of these awards and commendations, which recognise innovative teaching approaches that influence, motivate and inspire students to learn.
Our classes emphasise the role of accounting in the context of society to help understand the role accounting plays within our lives, the profession and society more broadly.
We believe our graduates should enter the workforce with a strong mix of applied theory and industry engagement. Our students have the option to complete an industry-based learning elective during their degree.
Recently, our students completed practical placements (elective units) in a range of organisations, such as Deloitte, E&Y, PwC, Telstra, Grant Thornton and Choice Hotels, to name a few.
We also offer an international study program that provides students with the opportunity to explore how culture affects accounting practices. Students enrolled in the international study program complete theoretical workshops and modules prior to attending a three-week study program in Europe during the summer period. This opportunity includes classes at the Monash University Centre in Prato, Italy, as well as a range of industry visits.
Professional business challenges
We encourage our students to participate in business challenges offered by industry partners and professional associations. Teams from Monash Business School have won Australian finals and represented Monash internationally in competitions such as the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants Global Business Challenge and the Best Practices Competition associated with Beta Alpha Psi, in which our team also took out the international final.
Similarly, our students have participated in competitions
. such as the E&Y “Survive the Panel” pitching competition, which enabled the winner to make their business a reality.
Beta Alpha Psi
We offer high-performing accounting students the opportunity to participate in an international honour organisation that supports and extends exceptional students. The Monash University Chapter of Beta Alpha Psi, Xi Epsilon, is a member of the global organisation Beta Alpha Psi.
Membership of this organisation provides our students with additional leadership and learning opportunities through professional events, service events focused on volunteering, and reaching out activities to the wider community.
