Our research degrees

The Department of Banking and Finance looks for exceptional candidates for our higher degree by research (HDR) program, which consists of the Master of Commerce (MCom) program and the PhD program.

MCom is a two-year research-oriented program preparing students for a finance PhD and an academic career. Anyone who is interested in an academic career in finance needs rigorous training and preparation for a PhD trajectory. The MCom offers thorough academic grounding in asset pricing, corporate finance, financial institutions, and behavioural finance. It also provides the skills required to undertake original research, such as econometrics, coding, and academic writing. Students are expected to complete coursework and write a Master thesis under the guidance of supervisors who are experts in their chosen areas.

All students enrolled in the MCom program receive scholarships that cover their living costs and waive their tuition fees. Outstanding Honours students at the Department of Banking and Finance also have the opportunity to join the second year of MCom

Upon successful completion of the MCom degree, selected students will progress to our PhD program. The Finance doctoral program provides students the opportunities to conduct original research and make significant contributions to the current knowledge of financial markets and institutions. The knowledge, skills, and opportunities in the MCom and PhD program will prepare graduates for a research career in reputable universities and research institutions around the world.
