Mia Edwards is a Visiting HDR student

Mia Edwards plans to host a research talk about her PhD research and what connections can be drawn between historical slavery and modern slavery to staff and students, both in terms of legal and advocacy difficulties within both contexts, as well as the physical and emotional toll that such experiences can cause. She also wants to learn from and potentially assist in running a session on the International Refugee Law course.
Mia currently collaborates with researchers in the UK about the rise of the far right, the manosphere, and white nationalist hypermasculinity, the ideologies of which partly originated in Atlantic slavery. She's interested in talking to staff and students in the history, law, politics and any wider departments about this other contemporary application of her research.
Mia plans to visit the National Archives in Sydney, Canberra, the Medical History Museum at the University of Melbourne, and the State Library of New South Wales to gather information for her first two PhD chapters which discuss the making of supposed racial difference, and how this was constructed in relation to masculinity and the body within the United States, as well as the impact that the environment was supposed to have upon black and white bodies during the 19th century. She wants to get global perspectives upon anti-slavery in different contexts, and the influence of the environment in making race, to show that there were similar processes happening during this period within other nations and areas of the world, and to make her thesis more comprehensive and global in scope by highlighting these international connections.
