Monash Law Students welcomed a special guest into their Public law and statutory interpretation class when Australia’s Attorney General dropped in recently.

Australia's Attorney-General the Hon Mark Dreyfus KC, MP made the surprise visit while he was at Clayton Campus to see AILECS, the Monash University and AFP joint research centre that uses the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to support law enforcement and make global, local and online communities safer.

Professor Marilyn Pittard, Interim Dean of the Law Faculty,  introduced the Attorney-General to the students. Dr Gina Bekker was teaching the class at the time and could only share with students beforehand that they were expecting a VIP special guest.

The Hon Dreyfus talked to the students about his own journey into law and confirmed with them that statutory interpretation was particularly important, whether they chose to work in politics, or any other area of law.

After meeting with the students the Attorney-General toured the Monash University Moot Court.

In November 2022, Attorney-General the Hon Mark Dreyfus KC, MP visited the Monash University Law Chambers for an interview with Distinguished Alumni Jon Faine. In this interview he discussed why he became a lawyer, his journey into politics and the value of legal education.
