Department of Design

Vivian Li is a design educator, interaction designer, and illustrator with a cross-disciplinary background spanning communication design, interaction design, and marketing communications. Her academic and professional practice is defined by a commitment to integrating diverse design perspectives into meaningful, human-centred outcomes, with a particular focus on the intersections of design practice, education, and creative entrepreneurship.

As a Lecturer for the Master of Design program, she leads curriculum development and the design of teaching materials for studio units within the Interaction Design specialisation. Her approach to teaching cultivates critical design thinking in students, equipping them with the strategic and creative competencies to operate across disciplines and build self-directed design practices. She maintains a strong commitment to inclusive design education, delivering learning experiences across in-person, hybrid, and asynchronous environments to meet the diverse needs of students.

In conjunction with her teaching responsibilities, she contributes to design and research activities across multiple projects within the Design Health Collab at Monash University, applying human-centred design methods to real-world challenges in global health and wellbeing.

Her professional practice extends beyond academia. As the founder of an independent illustration studio, she produces original works displayed at major art fairs and exhibitions, engaging directly with design communities and broader public audiences. This active industry engagement informs her teaching, ensuring her curriculum remains connected to the realities of professional creative practice and the evolving demands of the design industry.
