Building Better Cities

11/11/2025 06:30 pm 11/11/2025 08:00 pm Australia/Melbourne Building Better Cities

Join us at Building Better Cities - the first event of the Inside | Practice, guest lecture Series by the Department of Architecture, Monash University.

Both Alloy and Milieu share the belief that we create more than spaces for people. We build environments that shape lives, influence communities, and enrich collective experience through work that is beautiful, equitable, and sustainable.

Despite being situated on opposite sides of the globe, we have come to recognise that while the challenges facing our industry are universal, values-based development remains remarkably rare.

Founded in 2006, Alloy is a multidisciplinary, architect-led development company based in Brooklyn, New York. Alloy sees opportunity in the diversity and complexity of the urban environment, using exceptional architecture and thoughtful development to positively shape the built world. The company is currently delivering over two million square feet of projects in Downtown Brooklyn, including New York City’s first all-electric, carbon-neutral skyscraper and the world’s tallest Passive House building.

Established in 2010, Milieu is inspired by the culture and character of Melbourne. Each Milieu project is conceived to make a positive contribution to its setting. Through a diverse range of activities, Milieu seeks to foster connection, explore innovation, cultivate an everyday culture of design, and enable a well-lived life. The practice is currently developing Fitzroy Gasworks by Milieu, a new model for neighbourhood living delivered in partnership with Development Victoria.

The series brings together emerging and established practitioners, alternative studios, and allied professionals to share diverse approaches to architectural practice today. Hosted inside Melbourne’s leading design studios, each session cultivates open discussions about how architecture is evolving—across scales, disciplines, and modes of making—to shape more equitable, sustainable, and imaginative futures.
