Wetting, Wilds and Mirrors: Queer Creative Practices Symposium
Join us for a day-long symposium convened by the Queer Creative Practices Research Cluster at Monash Art Design and Architecture.
The symposium turns to Phasmahammer’s current exhibition at MUMA, Syncretic Wilds, as a springboard for the discussion, screening and new performance of works that engage and complicate queer embodiment, histories and aesthetics. Contributors to this symposium are artists who work with archives, the legacies of queer figures, and performance to generate work where gender and sexuality are temporally, relationally and sensorially disoriented.

The symposium will take place in a seated lecture theatre with a capacity of approximately 108 people. The space has artificial lighting, and speakers throughout the day will use an amplified sound system for presentations and discussion.
Between approximately 2:30–3:30 pm we will be screening a series of video works. During this session, the room lighting will be dimmed, and the videos will be presented with amplified sound, including both spoken dialogue and musical soundtracks. Sound levels will generally range from moderate to occasionally loud.
Audience members are welcome to enter and leave throughout the day if needed. Outside the lecture theatre there is also a foyer area with seating available as a quieter space, with additional seating located just outside the building.
The live performances will take place in a separate building. This venue also has artificial lighting and amplified sound, from a single speaker, so not spatialised. The performances include singing, spoken voice and recorded audio. One performance uses a subwoofer, so there will be periods of very low-frequency sound. Another performance incorporates a whip, which produces sudden, loud cracking sounds.
