Koorie Experience Day for Indigenous students held at Monash Art, Design and Architecture
On Tuesday 19 March, Monash Art, Design and Architecture hosted 70 Indigenous students from 13 secondary schools across the southeast of Naarm/Melbourne for Koorie Experience Day, a unique opportunity to explore the different creative practices on offer in our faculty.

Students were welcomed to Monash Art, Design and Architecture by N'arweet Dr Carolyn Briggs AM, Senior Elder of the Yaluk-ut Weelam clan of the Boonwurrung and Monash Adjunct Professor, and Yorta Yorta/Bangerang artist and Associate Dean, Indigenous, Dr Peta Clancy to come with purpose, to learn and explore what the day had to offer.
The 70 students were given guided tours of Steven Rhall and Sung Tieu: Stagecraft, the first exhibition of 2024 at Monash University Museum of Art (MUMA). The exhibition presented Taungurung artist Steven Rhall and Vietnamese-German artist Sung Tieu’s works together highlighting the artists’ shared interest in bureaucracy and power. They also participated in a hands-on fine art workshop with Kulin Country-based Pibbulman Noongar artist, Pierra Van Sparkes.

Koorie Experience Day participants also had the opportunity to explore Monash University facilities and engage with staff from other parts of the University community, including the William Cooper Institute and other faculties to showcase the study options available when considering university as a future pathway.
Monash Art, Design and Architecture staff worked closely with the South East Local Learning and Employment Network (SELLEN) and the Koorie Engagement Support Officers to ensure students were given the best opportunity to attend.
