James Bowman Fletcher

James Bowman Fletcher is a lecturer in the Department of Architecture at Monash University, a practising architect, and an editor of Memo Review Architecture. His research interests include architecture and art, architecture and building, and architecture and words. James’ recent written and built work has been published internationally in The Journal of Architecture and Ardeth and locally in Union. He is the current Coordinator and Chief Examiner of the Foundation Studio 2 unit in the Department of Architecture.

James’ realised and ongoing built works include A House from Another House [I] (2020-2023), A House from Another House [II] (2022-2023), Three Walls, Three Rooms (2022-2025), and A House from Another House [III] (2025-). Previously, as a co-founder of 227768c and OCTA, he realised the Apparatus Series (2016-2019). In 2025, James’ built work was exhibited in Parts of Practice (The Design Gallery at The University of Melbourne) alongside the work of Zuzana and Nicholas, Retallack Thompson, Anthony St John Parson, Lineburg Wang, Brunsdon Studio, Youssofzay Hart, Eldridge Anderson, Prior Barraclough, Office MI—JI, and Trower Falvo Architects.

In 2023, James was awarded an Early Career Researcher Grant by Monash University’s Office of the Provost and Senior Vice-President to undertake fieldwork and archival research at the Judd Foundation and the Chinati Foundation/la Fundación Chinati in Marfa, Texas.

In 2024, he curated the exhibition Five Architectural Case Studies of the Chinati Foundation/la Fundación Chinati at the Chinati Foundation/la Fundación Chinati in Marfa, Texas.
