Dr Stephen Palmer
Stephen Palmer is an artist, writer and educator living on Wurundjeri Country. He is currently an Assistant Lecturer in design theory.
Stephen was initially trained in painting, and later obtained a Master of Arts (Critical Theory) from in Centre of Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies at Monash University, and a PhD in Fine Art from the Victorian College of the Arts.
His research interests bridge technology and perception, literature, psychoanalysis and critical theory. He has published texts regularly in exhibition catalogues, periodicals and journals, focused primarily on contemporary visual arts.
His art practice employs drawing, painting, video and writing, and is concerned with the uncertainties of perception and transcription. He has exhibited regularly as both a solo practitioner and collaborator. Recent exhibition projects include Words and Images at Fitzroy Library, and REAL JOB, curated by Madeleine Thornton-Smith at Counihan Gallery.
He has undertaken a number of collaborative projects concerned with the conditions in which artists work. Most recently he created the Art and Organising Index with 1856 and the Artists’ Union Working Group. He was also a member of Artists’ Committee, and was a co-facilitator of Light Projects ARI (Northcote).
