We will be studying Japanese linear shopping streets - old and new - and the unique micro-scale commercial-residential public realm environment of Japanese cities to which they conrtibute. Students will design and build projects on location, in teams with Japanese masters students from Ritsumeikan University. A parallel analytical study and studio design project located in one of Melbourne’s linear shopping strips will be developed individually on return: incorporating a series of careful micro interventions for macro urban effect.
