This subject continues our collaboration with the Centre for Appropriate Technology and the Olkola Aboriginal Corporation. This interdisciplinary study unit uniquely builds upon the design proposals and construction manuals for the Olkola cultural knowledge centre to develop a detailed structural and services engineering design in collaboration with 300 nal year civil, environmental and mechanical engineering students.. Architecture students will pitch their designs to the engineering students then in the role of the architectural consultant mentor teams of civil, environmental and mechanical engineers as they resolve the engineering designs. Students will deepen their understanding of remote area building, participatory co-design and appropriate technologies and construction systems. Architecture students will also complete a development application submission to the Cook Shire Council, which will provide the opportunity to respond to and incorporate Olkola’s feedback on the design and construction proposals produced in Semester 01.
