Bathing and Meditative Making

“...the wish to ensure a delight in experiencing water at different temperatures and in different spatial situations with variations in the lighting, the colours, the climate, the materials, the sound; close contact with stone and water; immersing oneself in water for relaxation; as a ritual Purification. Peace, Serenity, no noisy attractions, no intrusive stimulation, only the sensation of one’s own body undergoing subtle change.” – Peter Zumthor, Therme Vals, 2007

Precedents

The study of others’ work to deepen your own work and understanding using our creative processes, meditative making. The easiest way to understand your own strengths and weaknesses your own ways of thinking and designing is by comparing these to those of your peers and other professionals.

Project

Design a public Bathhouse this will include different pools and steam rooms for females and males, indoor and outdoor resting and massage spaces and a cafe. You will be given a full program with sizes, a maximum volume and parameters, there will be no actual site.

The aim of this studio is to design a consistent architectural narrative with a series of spaces that are high in spatial and sensory quality. The challenge is to investigate and refine our understanding of how the human body and psyche experience and inhabit space.
