Cut / Copy

‘Cut / Copy’ is a research and design unit that introduces students to new approaches to design process by way of digital imaging technologies. Students will develop advanced skills in digital design processes, 3D scanning, 3D printing and virtual reality whilst engaging in current disciplinary inquiry into cultural heritage and architectural preservation.

The initial phase of the studio will be focused on developing knowledge and skills in image capture technology, specifically 3D scanning and photography. Students will undertake a covert tour of some of Melbourne’s most notorious architectural monuments, from Ground’s to DCM. Over the course of the first half of semester, students will 3D scan prominent structures in the city. The scanner will mercilessly measure, capture and store the buildings details, cloning the original architects’ intellectual property.

Student’s will be asked to produce a series of reproductions of the scan data, in the form of drawings, and large scale physical models. This process of reproduction and representation will be considered a form of critical observation, through which students will be required to analyse and explore concepts of architectural detail, material and digital culture.
