Space Forgets You

Studio Outline

Architecture and art have throughout history been intertwined. The studio will investigate this through the lens of art in public space, otherwise known as Public Art, and join the growing number of architects in Melbourne currently collaborating or solely working in the grey area between art and architecture.

The studio will have a research base, but will predominantly be an exploration through doing; highly experimental, realising 1:1 spatial interventions, with each task building on the previous.

Much of the semester will focus on finding and developing a style and medium, as a means to interpreting and challenging a space, the city at large, a moment in time, the role and function of Public Art, and a conceptual or political agenda.

Objective

Students will gain an understanding of the breadth of sanctioned and subversive art practices within the public sphere, both temporary and permanent, and having explored many of these, will result in the creation and meticulous documentation of a substantial body of work.

The studio will engage with (permitted) Graf ti practices, and larger themes such as Street Art, Tactical Urbanism, Guerrilla Gardening, Performance Art, and Projection Art.

The final provocation will draw upon the semester’s exploration, blurring the lines between Architecture, Urban Design, and Public Art to propose an architectural outcome connecting the Caul eld Train Station to Monash University Caul eld campus.
