Hybrid House

Hybrid House studio focuses on understanding current knowledge and preconceptions of housing ideas to challenge and experiment with them. During the twelve weeks this semester, you will experiment with residential design through three design stages.

Stage 1

You will use your home, space you know intimately, as a precedent to explore practical and theoretical aspects of housing design. You will critically analyse various aspects of your house or apartment and propose design changes to improve the quality of living space.

Stage 2

You will reconstruct the domestic spaces from the series of online written stories about home and the sense of belonging. You will analyse the similarities and differences between your and the imaginary house from the story and propose a hybrid of the two spaces.

Stage 3

In the second half of the semester, you will continue working with the hybrid house proposal, but at this stage, you will use it as a base for multi-residential housing. You will test various organisational possibilities and ways to incorporate inclusive communal spaces for the inhabitants.

We value the phenomenological experience of space—you will use your body and sensory inputs to understand the architectural space of your home. You will be working with analogue (hand-drawing and maquette making) and digital tools to produce your proposals.
