Spencer 2 Spring (S2S) is interested in understanding Melbourne -particularly the Hoddle Grid- by cataloging the moments and events that make the city unique. The studio sees the city as its main source of knowledge and inspiration: Melbourne as precedent for intent.
This semester, S2S will focus on housing and the provision of diverse and affordable spaces for the wide mix of contemporary city dwellers. The studio will transpose ideas from the Missing Middle movement, onto the urban realm of the CBD.
Similar to previous S2S deliveries, students will follow a precise methodology to extract systems from the Hoddle Grid; analyse them; and apply them to a medium scale adaptive reuse project in one of the current Telstra exchange buildings in the city.
Students can expect to work in a large group, in pairs, and individually, during the different stages of the semester. With the return of face-to-face learning, large scale physical models will also make its way back to the studio dynamic, whilst drawing remains an integral aspect of the studio outputs.
