Breath of the Earth is a series of small minimal drawings and watercolour paintings that primarily utilise the grid. The concept began with the simple process of mark making produced by the brush running out of colour as it is applied to the paper. At the start, the watercolour paintings were addressing a moment of circumambulation of pilgrims around the Kaaba – referring to the anti-clockwise gesture, the sense of flowing, circulating, that also appears everywhere in the Universe, from the tiny atoms in our body to huge galaxies.
For this series and those I have subsequently worked on, my concept has stemmed from the self; identity, religion, and the nature of this life. My creative process is based on time in a manner that is meditative. The dialogue between parts in the watercolours is often like hushed murmurs between each other, softly bouncing back and forth – allowing the intention of the idea to connect with the consciousness of the hand controlling the brush. The work in all my series preserve the delicateness of this flowing motion, the journey that is ephemeral, the impermanence and fragility of nature. My work retains a sense of being in ‘progress’ and thus, open-ended.
