Exploring the themes of gluttony and excess, this series of small-scale gum-based ‘paintings’ is representative of the act of devouring and discarding.
By replacing paint with chewed and discarded gum a space of confusion and conflict - in relation to materiality and meaning - is created for the viewer. These ‘paintings’ are installed systematically at eye, nose and mouth level, to engage the senses of sight, smell and taste. The enticement of the familiar and pleasant aroma of bubble-gum soon descends into the realisation that this scent exists within saliva-filled waste. They are both simultaneously seductive and repellent.
