My work allows for the viewer to place themselves into an eerie or mystifying environment, hoping that they may find something comforting in the new surroundings. Portraying the idea of trying to find a little bit of your own comfort in a more uncomfortable environment, situation or moment in life.
I tend to gravitate toward strange, ominous and unknown surroundings with the intent of portraying a sense of discomfort while depicting the things that symbolise the feeling of home or a place where you feel secure, making you think back to your childhood even. There are two streams that overlap throughout the work, the strangeness and comfort, the unknown and the familiar.
The environments in my paintings are something that I construct but I am interested in leaving things open ended, allowing the viewer to make their own beginning or ending. I want the viewer to feel a sense of security of their own in a world that they’re looking into.
