Through sculpture, photography and installation I examine the complexities of the fashion world. My artwork draws on my experience studying and working in fashion in both London and New York.
I have a love-hate relationship with fashion. I love the way fashion can enable self expression and the high level of craftsmanship of particular collections. However fashion also operates as a business, creating and exploiting people’s vulnerabilities, leading to compulsive and addictive consumerism. It drives a materialist existence that quickly renders our belongings obsolete. Materialism provides a moment of security before items are tossed away for a new fix.
I question the role of fashion in shaping self perception. This leads to an exploration of the body, finding alternative representations of its form. I examine the interaction of body and object and how they may perform with one another. I work with the readymade, combining the human form and discarded materials, to create options for renewal or rebirth rather than rejection.
