Halcyon is a bio-centric proposal which aims to strengthen Australia’s ecosystems, currently under threat from the inevitable infestation of the Varroa mite. With this mite capable of devastating honey bee populations, the project will explore the potential to increase the density of urban native pollinators by addressing their current sparse refuge availability due to urbanisation. Halcyon will create a resilient ecosystem, no longer reliant on the honey bee.
As a two-part series of synergistic interventions, this project proposes refuges for the pollinators located in major green spaces, and a pedagogical pavilion to educate humans to assist native biodiversity located between the Melbourne Museum and Royal Exhibition Building.
