‘Vibrating Colour’ is a collage of monoprints on paper investigating the effects of light and colour through the process of traditional printmaking techniques. Blending certain hues together creates the perception of light and depth on a two-dimensional plane, making them “vibrate”. Early explorations of colour and light in this work arose from research into places of worship with a focus on the way light and scale have been manipulated to impact the viewers or worshippers. The results of monumental architecture are otherworldly and transcendental experiences and it is the viewer’s individual experience and emotional response that is the focal point of the work.
The concept of the sublime and transcendence arose and the work is informed by artists such as Mark Rothko and James Turrell, unpacking an exploration of our primal relationship with colour and light, as humans allows their work to continue to communicate with viewers with enduring sublimity.
